Reading a yard that won't drain itself
Standing water is not one problem, it is whatever is stopping water from leaving on its own. Sometimes the yard simply has nowhere for the water to fall to. Sometimes the ground has enough slope but Georgia's red clay will not let water soak through fast enough to keep up with a hard rain, so it sits on top instead. We read the actual grade before we dig anything, because a trench cut to the wrong fall just moves the standing water three feet over rather than getting rid of it. A back-yard pump system we installed for standing water is still running five years later, taking over exactly where gravity runs out of fall to work with.
Where the water actually goes when it leaves
Line runs from a catch basin at the low point out to somewhere the water is actually allowed to go, not just off the edge of one property onto the next. One job came from run-off washing soil straight into a neighbor's yard every time it rained - the fix was a proper line and basin, not a berm to redirect the problem sideways. Once the trench is backfilled and compacted, the yard goes back down flat enough that the fix disappears.

Why Middle Georgia clay changes the math
Red clay compacts hard and drains slowly, which is exactly why so much of this work is drainage rather than watering. A trench through clay has to be bedded and backfilled with more care than the same cut in sandy soil, or the line telegraphs through the lawn as a sunken stripe by the following spring. We account for that in how deep and how wide we cut, not just where.
What goes back on top
Once a trench or a regrade closes up, the ground on top usually needs to be finished, not just left as bare clay for you to reseed. That is sod work more often than not, laid straight onto the ground we just put back so the yard reads as done, not as a repair.
