Supplied and laid by the pallet. Usually the last step on a drainage or regrade job, so the yard goes back down finished instead of left as bare clay to seed yourself.
Sod after a dig, not sod as a shortcut
Most of the sod we lay follows a drainage trench or a regrade, not a bare yard someone decided to redo on its own. When ground gets opened up, backfilled and compacted, seed alone would take a season to catch and would show every uneven patch underneath. Sod goes down straight onto the finished grade instead, by the pallet, cut tight against beds and edges rather than rolled out loose. One back yard with a new underground pump system never needed a single grass seed laid afterward - the sod closed the job the same week the trench did.
What a freshly laid yard needs first
New sod roots into the ground underneath it, not into the air above it, so the first weeks matter more than people expect. Keeping the new grass consistently damp while the roots take hold, and keeping heavy foot traffic off it until it does, is most of what decides whether it looks laid or planted a year later. Why sod follows drainage and regrade work
A yard that just had a trench closed or a low spot regraded is exactly the ground sod is built for - freshly disturbed, freshly compacted, and needing something on top before the next rain washes it loose. If your yard is holding water before it is bare, the drainage work usually needs to happen first so the sod has ground worth rooting into.
